In Hollywood from 1914, he was successful as an actor in villainous roles. His career as a director, which produced films such as Foolish Wives 1922, was wrecked by his extravagance ( Greed 1923) and he returned to acting in such films as La Grande Illusion 1937 and Sunset Boulevard 1950.
